An ad in USA Today, a resolution in San Francisco!

Posted by Will

dnm_ad_thumb1If you happened to open up a Bay Area edition of USA Today this morning, then your day was given a palpable buzz by the visual feast of awesomeness that was the full-page Do Not Mail advertisement which appeared in the Money section! You, the supporters of ForestEthics and Do Not Mail made this ad happen with your donations, and in doing so you guys are advancing the cause of common sense, and consumer control of over the waste pouring into our mailboxes. THANK YOU.

We decided to go with a simple, powerful design featuring our logo front and center. Intended message: On its first anniversary, Do Not Mail and a solution for junk mail has captured the national mood, and a desire for a return to common sense. And neither greenwash nor junk mail industry lobbying will stop us.

The Bay Area ad placement was chosen to coincide with our upcoming first victory: the San Francisco resolution in support of state and national Do Not Mail Registries.

When it gets passed by its committee on March 23, and when it gets passed in earnest by the SF Board of Supervisors on March 31, a government body will have recognized for the first time that a large majority of Americans oppose the junk mail status quo.

And with state Do Not Mail bills in Florida and New York on deck, the junk mail industry can no longer deny that their lobbying efforts oppose the will of the majority of Americans.

Do Not Mail’s second year is going to be a lot of fun.

The ad looks great and you guys are doing such a great job.

Today in Copenhagen, Denmark (site of the upcoming global climate treaty negotiations) scientists from around the world are gathering to tell our heads of state that climate change is worse than anyone predicted. Our leaders have just a few years left to actually reduce global greenhouse gas emissions low enough to avoid runaway climate change.

In light of the science, in light of the fate of our planet, it is great to see you taking on such an important issue. Our paper industries are ripping out forests, causing climate change, only to put annoying mail in our boxes. It must be stopped in our race to avoid runaway climate change.

Well done ForestEthics. I wish I were there with you and I will be in spirit!

I have to say, that I can not agree with you in 100%, but that’s just my IMHO, which could be very wrong.
p.s. You have an awesome template . Where did you find it?

Get this through your head….a city CAN’T pass a “Do Not Mail” law because the USPS is an entity of the Federal government. And under the 10th amendment to the US Constitution all those rights that are not reserved for the states are retained by the Federal government. And since the Postal Service is mentioned in the Constitution any law passed by a state or a city that would violate the 10th Amendment would be declared null and void in a court of law. There isn’t going to be any “Do Not Mail” law, so I suggest you find something more constructive to do with your time!

This is a good thing. In the Los Angeles area,at least, the mass mailer companies are allready scaling back deliveries to higher income neighbourhoods. As these are least likely to use the mass mailers.A Do Not Mail List should actually be acceptable to them. They’ll then know exactly how many to print up and send out.Waste not, want not.
